QUILT 70”x60"x3” ceramic, mood ring pigment, acrylic paint, lacquer
QUILT draws inspiration from a tattered family quilt featuring an interlocking wedding ring pattern that was passed down to me. The original quilt is indicative of women's labor and contains implicit messages about a constructed female identity. As an individual who identifies as non-binary, I utilize performance to confront the dysphoria experienced with the power dynamics of predetermined roles and expected emotional response. In a video-documented performance activating the sculpture, I delve into the heaviness and multiplicity of grappling with my own body, embracing its ever-changing form. During performance, I am enveloped in a chainmail blanket made of interconnected ceramic mood rings that subtly change color in response to heat. Beneath the sculpture's weight, the body becomes diffracted, existing in a state of flux that momentarily transcends identity and presumption.
